About the role

Are you passionate about data security and want to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of maritime emissions reporting? This is a unique opportunity to kickstart your career in maritime R&D by diving into the world of ethical hacking and helping to ensure the integrity of crucial environmental data.

The maritime industry is under increasing scrutiny for its environmental impact, with regulations requiring accurate emissions reporting to ensure sustainability and compliance. At DNV, we are committed to safeguarding life, property, and the environment by pioneering the development of advanced data verification methods that ensure transparency and accuracy in emissions reporting.

For summer 2025, the Maritime Data-Driven Services research group at Høvik is offering a challenging and exciting opportunity for students to engage in a cutting-edge ethical hacking task. The goal is to explore potential vulnerabilities in our emissions reporting system, attempting to manipulate data without being detected by our verification methods. This exercise will not only help identify weaknesses but also emphasize the need for enhanced regulations around tamperproofing of maritime data.

What You’ll Work On:

As a part of our team, you’ll work hands-on with real-world emissions data and our verification systems to:

  • Conduct ethical hacking simulations aimed at modifying emissions data.
  • Analyze how such manipulations could go unnoticed by existing verification methods.
  • Develop strategies to enhance the robustness of data verification, ensuring that tampering is detectable and preventable.
  • Collaborate with experts to identify potential regulatory improvements to strengthen the integrity of emissions reporting in the maritime sector.

Preferred Skills:

  • Programming skills with experience in scripting or data handling (e.g., Python, R).
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles, ethical hacking, or data integrity techniques is a plus.
  • Interest in environmental sustainability and emissions reporting.
  • Experience with data engineering or machine learning is a bonus.

What we offer

  • Valuable and real-life experience through our projects
  • The opportunity to work with world class experts
  • Being involved with solving real life business challenges
  • Be part of a large group of summer students with different backgrounds and universities
  • Building a professional network for the future
  • DNVs headquarters at Høvik is a great place to be a summer student. In addition to challenging work, there are also fun social events arranged during the summer
  • Full access to all sports and leisure facilities at campus, including fitness center, kayaks, tennis court etc.

Previous summer students have experienced the summer jobs in DNV to be an excellent opportunity to get to know DNV as a workplace while obtaining valuable and real work experience. At Høvik – start the day with a kayak on the fjord before work.
