Class Development / Calculation Tools

Class Development (M-SD) is one of five operational units within Ship Classification in Maritime. M-SD contributes to Maritime Strategic Goals through initiatives focusing on developing future ways of service delivery to improve customer satisfaction, quality, efficiency, and automation. Digitalization is a key vehicle for success. Our initiatives are organized in development programs. The total number of permanent employees in M-SD is around 110, located at Høvik, Hamburg, Gdynia, Shanghai and Pune. In addition, the unit has sub-contractors on a temporary basis. 

We are now looking for a highly motivated summer student to work as a software developer in our department Calculation tool and with our Nauticus Hull development. The unit has 22 employees in Hamburg, Shanghai and Høvik. The work location is at Høvik

Nauticus Hull is a specialized software package developed by DNV for the strength assessment and structural design of ship hulls. It provides a comprehensive set of tools for efficient hull design and verification, ensuring compliance with DNV Rules and IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR) for bulk carriers and oil tankers. A lot of our focus now is to investigate how we can utilize AI and agentic workflow to enhance the user experience within Nauticus Hull.

Key features include:

  • 3D Model-based structural analysis with integration to OCX (Open Class 3D Exchange format)
  • Support for both prescriptive and Finite Element Method (FEM) calculations
  • Integration with popular 3D design and FEM systems like NAPA Steel, ANSYS and MSC Patran
  • Used by over 275 shipyards and design offices worldwide
  • Nauticus Hull helps optimize the hull structure during the design process, ensuring safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

Typical tasks as a summer student in Calculation Tools would be:

  • Enable AI features in Nauticus Hull
  • Enable scripting features in Nauticus Hull
  • Improve the OCX import/export from/to other CAD tools
  • Integrate Nauticus Hull software with other design/CAD tools
  • Integrate the Nauticus Hull 3D model with FE calculation

Who are we looking for?

  • Highly motivated students with an ambition to work in a software development role.
  • A pro-active attitude to engage with other to find good solutions.
  • Good communication skills in English. Knowledge of Norwegian is a preference.
  • Technical interest within software development and especially AI.
  • Good digital skills (data processing, FEA, CAD, controller programming) is an advantage

We are primarily seeking 3rd and 4th year students with relevant Bachelor/Master Program specialization in:

  • Naval Architechture
  • Computer Science / Information Science
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Physics /Mathematics
