The maritime industry is undergoing a deep transformation to meet ambitious climate targets, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. At DNV, we are committed to supporting this transition by delivering trusted insights, technical expertise, and forward-looking research.

As the industry explores a wide range of decarbonization strategies – such as alternative fuels (e.g., ammonia, methanol, LNG, hydrogen), hybrid and electric propulsion, energy efficiency technologies, and carbon capture – our team is at the forefront of developing models, tools, and insights that shape future regulations, operational practices, and DNV services. To reach a comprehensive impact, we work at the intersection of ship design, fuel lifecycle analysis, emissions modelling, and regulatory compliance.

We are looking for a dedicated and curious researcher to join our Maritime Research Team, focusing on either:

  • Modeling maritime emissions, or
  • Vessel efficiency.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of science-based solutions that support the industry’s shift toward cleaner, more efficient operations.

You will be part of DNV’s Group Research and Development (GRD) at Høvik, Norway, working alongside a diverse team of experts exploring the future of maritime transport – from alternative fuels and propulsion technologies to digital tools and regulatory frameworks – helping to guide both industry and policy toward sustainable outcomes.

If you are passionate about maritime sustainability and want to make a real impact through applied research, we encourage you to apply.

Typical responsibilities:

  • Engage in research projects to build knowledge, competence, and insights into the costs, benefits, and risks of future decarbonization technologies, alternative fuels, and their value chains.
  • Develop standards, recommended practices, and associated tools for assessing emissions, fuel consumption, and vessel efficiency technologies.
  • Publish forecasts, scientific papers, non-technical reports, and professional presentations.
  • Initiate, design, and manage new research projects in partnership with academia and industry (e.g., EU, NFR, JIP).
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to understand industry needs and pilot solutions.

What we offer

  • A passionate, interdisciplinary team where you can make a real difference
  • The opportunity to work with a market-leading brand at the forefront of maritime research
  • A value-driven culture that prioritizes care for employees, customers, and society
  • An inspiring, international, and collaborative work environment
  • Freedom to explore, innovate, and grow professionally
  • Flexible working hours and six weeks of annual vacation
  • A competitive total compensation package

About you

Your Qualifications and Expertise:

  • MSc or PhD in environmental sciences, chemical engineering, marine technology, physical chemistry, statistics, or a related field
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Emissions from (maritime) transport: modeling or measurement of emissions to air and water, techno-economic analyses, life-cycle assessments (LCA), emission control, and abatement technologies
    • Energy use onboard vessels: energy management systems, hybrid or alternative propulsion systems, fuel optimization through operational measures, energy efficiency technologies, or routing strategies
  • Insights into some aspects of the maritime industry, such as ship propulsion systems, vessel design and retrofitting, alternative fuels, bunkering, decision support tools, operational practices, maritime regulations, and compliance
  • 5+ years of experience in research and development, or relevant onboard experience in the topics above
