In December 2021 we announced our plans to develop and industrialize HalZero, a new CO2-emission free process to produce primary aluminum. The development of HalZero is one of three pillars in Hydro’s commitment to become a supplier of near-zero CO2 aluminum.

The work towards near-zero CO2 aluminum is headed by the Technology and Operational Support (TOS) unit in Hydro Aluminum Metal. TOS comprises around 190 highly skilled employees in Norway and Germany, with the main task to support commercial and operational units in improving profitability and sustainability. TOS maintains a focus on the short and medium term - while also having longer term technology development as a core activity. The HalZero development is one example of our long-term activities.

We are now looking for a skilled Safety Engineer to join our team. This position will actively contribute to Hydro’s sustainability agenda, particularly towards our near-zero CO2 aluminum activities and HalZero. The candidate holding this position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of technologists that work together towards an industrialized HalZero process. The candidate will also be included in other existing and future projects in TOS and Hydro. You will have a unique opportunity to create an environment within a field that is still rather unknown to the world.

Office location will be in Porsgrunn or Oslo. Some travel is expected.

Main responsibilities

As a Safety Engineer you will be an important part of the team that develops the HalZero technology in TOS. Safety is Hydro’s number one priority, and you will be a key part in ensuring that also HalZero will be operated safely.

Your main tasks will be:

• Responsible for implementation of safe design within the HalZero development
• Responsible for Technical Safety topics within the HalZero development
• Support the technology development organization with relevant guidance, know-how and hands on assistance of safety related topics, including adherence to relevant safety standards
• Conduct risk assessments and analyses to identify potential hazards, plan, implement, document and complete safety reviews. Following this; recommend corrective actions based on analysis of incidents, recommend corrective actions to prevent future incidents and follow up implementation of this
• Assessment of safety barriers and technical safety features
• Stay up to date with relevant regulations and standards to ensure compliance
• Establish and operate competence programs for HalZero at relevant plants within technical safety subjects.
• Cooperate with relevant colleagues in TOS/Hydro/externally where relevant
• Support the units within Hydro Aluminium Metal in improving the technical safety performance

Desired qualifications

• Higher relevant technical education; BSc (minimum), MSc, PhD or equivalent. Lack of formal education can be compensated for by significant relevant experience.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience
• Skilled and comfortable in facilitating risk analysis workshops
• Good knowledge of rules and regulations relevant for HalZero (chemical process technology, piloting and industrial process plant applications, machine directive, PED, IEC, quality and risk management, …)
• Practical and hands-on approach towards follow-up of on-site implementation
• Competence within and experience from technology qualification programs (comprising everything from initial design and piloting to operation of industrialized facilities), is beneficial

Fluency in written and spoken English. Fluency in spoken Norwegian is an advantage
