About the role
DNV’s strategic research unit, Group Research and Development (GRD) has per today close to 130 talented researchers covering a wide range of selected topics of strategic importance to DNV. We do research within areas where DNV is large and well-known such as the Maritime and Energy sector, as well as the areas Digital Assurance, Food & Ocean Systems and Healthcare https://www.dnv.com/research/index.html
We perform strategic and applied research for DNV focusing on knowledge development and technology demonstration through collaborations with academia and industry. We are a diverse group of researchers with different educational backgrounds, age and nationality. Our largest locations are in Norway (Oslo and Trondheim), but we also have research units in Europe and Asia.
DNV launched August 2023 a new trainee program based in GRD in close cooperation with the DNV business areas, a new group of trainees started in August 2024 and we now look for candidates for the 2025 program starting in August next year. The focus areas for the 2025 trainee program are:
- Risk management of Artificial Intelligence: Risk management of Data-driven approaches to gain new insights from data, models and simulations. Our focus is to build trust in AI enabled industrial systems. Our application areas cover maritime, energy, healthcare, aquaculture and biodiversity.
- Maritime: Product assurance of autonomous navigation systems and AI enabled systems to support increased levels of automation and integration of complex systems with data/information management on maritime vessels.
- Energy: Researching low-carbon solutions to support the energy transition through our work with hydrogen, power management and the Energy Transition Outlook report.
What to expect as a Research trainee in Group Research and Development:
- A 2 years’ trainee program with 3 rotations (work periods) of 8 months each
- The rotations will be both within GRD and the business areas in DNV
- Our main office in Oslo/Høvik is the base for the program, with at least one of the rotations being at a different location (abroad or in another office in Norway)
- A great opportunity to test how it is to work with applied research in a topic you are familiar with – and also gain experience in other related areas and services
- The possibility to work with highly skilled scientists and engineers in different settings
- After completion of the trainee program you will be get a relevant position within DNV – either in GRD or in a business area, depending on business needs and your preferences

About you
We are looking for candidates with a Master degree or a PhD within the disciplines mentioned above. In addition to a relevant technical background we look for candidates with the following qualifications and characteristics:
- An open and analytical mindset with a strong drive to learn and take on new challenges
- Ability to combine the interest for applied research with curiosity and interest in other services in DNV, also to work within advisory and consultancy services
- Interest in topics such as computer science, statistics, simulations, programming and machine learning is an advantage
- Thrive to work in a collaborative, diverse and international environment
- Strong academic results combined with good communication skills and fluency in English, both verbal and written
- Graduation with a Master or PhD degree from 2023 - 2025 (i.e up to max 2 years of working experience) - and ready to join us from latest mid-August 2025
