The section Maritime Research is a well-established unit within Group Research & Development (GRD). GRD currently runs five industry research programmes: Maritime, Energy, Healthcare and Food & Supply Chain. Another three programmes address cross-industry challenges: Digital Assurance, Ocean Space and Energy Transition. Our group research and development unit create longer-term value for existing and new markets, through knowledge development, scientific legitimacy, thought leadership and forecasts on the world’s major transformations.
The Maritime research programme will focus on building competence, publishing key results and developing prototypes for future guidelines, rules and services. At present, the programme has three pillars addressing zero-carbon fuels, autonomous ship technology and data-driven services. The programme contents mainly reflect the maritime business area development needs. We use data, digital technologies, and models to do digital assurance of safety and sustainability in the maritime sector.
The successful candidate will manage the section Maritime Research in Høvik. They will report to the Group Research and Development Director and will be the associated research program director responsible for the following tasks:
- Stay updated on technology, regulatory, societal, and environmental trends and analyse their implications for DNV's research and business needs.
- Develop and evolve the maritime programme research strategy based on identified needs and trends.
- Implement the research strategy by:
- Manage employees, including initial recruitment of staff, resource assignment, competence development, performance management, supervision of project managers
- Manage program exploration zone (generate ideas, develop concepts, submit proposals for public funded projects, create position papers)
- Manage program demonstration zone (select and run technology development projects reaching prototype)
- Explore focus areas, identify new topics, develop concepts, select projects, manage technology development projects
- Chair the programme advisory group and keep close contact to relevant business areas
- Establish and maintain contact to relevant university departments and research institutes
- Participate in relevant industry associations and working groups - Contribute to development and cross-programme alignment of the overall GRD strategy
- Contribute to the digital transformation of GRD and of DNV
Position Qualifications
- Ability to translate future needs into research projects and eventually into prototypes
- Ability to deliver project results within agreed schedules and budgets
- Ability to motivate and coach employees and create an inclusive, innovative, and collaborative culture
- Minimum 5 years of experience within DNV, or equivalent from industry
- Preferably experience in management of R&D teams, or similar management experience.
- Preferably experience in maritime research.
- Preferably successful experience in building R&D consortiums, and successful EU and Research Council applications.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Master or PhD degree in relevant area
