About the role

Do you want to help address some of the world's most pressing challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and the transition to nature-positive ocean industries?

We are strengthening our Ocean Systems research team and are seeking a highly motivated Ocean Economy Researcher to help advance our understanding of the ocean economy and its future development.

The successful candidate combines expertise in economics with a strong understanding of ocean-related sectors and value chains. You are a systems thinker who can analyse the interactions between economic, technological, environmental, and societal drivers shaping the ocean economy. You bring strong analytical and quantitative capabilities, including experience working with complex datasets, data analysis, and modelling.

In this role, you will contribute to the development of DNV's ocean economy forecasts and broader ocean economy research, applying systems thinking, economic analysis, and quantitative methods to generate insights for industry, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

You will join the Ocean and Food Systems Programme within Group Research and Development (GRD), a multidisciplinary research environment that works across DNV's business areas to generate new insights, methods, and services. As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to influence DNV's research and innovation agenda and contribute to shaping a sustainable future for the ocean.

Key tasks:

  • Conduct research on existing and emerging ocean value chains, including drivers of demand for ocean goods and services, seafood, aquaculture, offshore technologies, marine and maritime economics, policy developments, and pathways towards nature-positive ocean industries.
  • Contribute to the continued development of our forecasts and simulation models exploring the future of the ocean economy.
  • Identify and develop new research opportunities and contribute to the formulation of future research projects.
  • Process, analyse, and visualise data to support research activities and model development.
  • Document findings and contribute to DNV reports, position papers, and scientific publications.
  • Present insights and recommendations to DNV business areas, customers, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to translate research into practical solutions and business opportunities.

About you

Position Qualifications:

  • MSc or PhD in industrial economics, natural resource economics, or environmental economics, combined with strong knowledge of ocean-related sectors such as aquaculture, offshore energy, shipping, and maritime activities.
  • Strong systems-thinking, analytical, and quantitative capabilities, including experience with complex datasets, data analysis and modelling.
  • Experience with Python, R, systems analysis, operations research or system dynamics is an advantage.
  • 2 to 5 years of relevant industry or research experience
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
