Head of Discipline – Energy Solutions

Do you want to take part in our innovative #FutureNow strategy and make Norway and the world more sustainable?
Can you see yourself leading specialists and project managers within Energy Solutions, and at the same time contribute to our projects with your extensive technical knowledge? And are you motivated by leadership? Then, here is your chance to convert aspirations into actions.

To further expand our skills within Energy Solutions in COWI, we are looking for a Head of Discipline to join our team. The Discipline has 10 employees delivering specialized project work within solar energy, batteries, electrification, energy system analysis, and regulatory work related to new energy production and energy infrastructure. You will be responsible for professional development in your discipline and have a commercial mindset in order to maintain and grow a motivated team of employees.

Turn challenges into sustainable solutions

We are looking for a Head of Discipline to lead our discipline for Energy Solutions in our newly established Executive unit Renewable Energy. Renewable Energy consists of around 100 individuals organized into 7 disciplines and contributes significantly to our customers' transition toward a more sustainable future. The discipline plays a vital role in executing COWIs strategy FUTURE-NOW, delivering energy consultancy services on projects within our prioritized sectors.

As Head of Discipline, you will be the day-to-day people manager of a team of 10 skilled energy advisors.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Facilitate and serve as a role model according to COWI’s leadership behaviours and values, encouraging employee engagement by conveying key messages in your own tone of voice and promoting a high-performance, diverse and inclusive culture, while ensuring well-being and cultivating a positive working environment.
  • Act as senior specialist / discipline lead on projects (target billability 75%) and lead the discipline group outside project work by managing technical and professional development and maintaining up-to-date skills insights to support effective staffing.
  • Support the Head of Engineering in workforce planning processes, including hiring, workforce adjustments, and promotions aligned with plans, demand and performance.
  • Work closely with the other Heads of Disciplines, market and project directors, and the Vice President to guarantee alignment and collaboration across functions.

You will be part of the department management team - and you will have 6 other Head of Disciplines and a Technical director as your closest colleagues and peers. You will report to the VP, Head of Engineering Renewable Energy.

Your skills. Our team. Together we design the future.

Like us, you believe that effective leadership is about providing a clear and meaningful direction for your team while encouraging them to engage fully with their responsibilities. You always delegate responsibility and ensure an open and safe dialogue, and you coach your people to reach their aspirations through constructive, fact-based feedback. Attracting and developing a diverse group of high-potential team members is at the top of your agenda, as is creating an inclusive, caring and trusting culture in your team.

On top of that, we expect that you already are:

  • Preferably an experienced leader of others, and project management experience can also be relevant
  • Several years of relevant experience within the energy field
  • Minimum bachelor level in electrical or energy engineering
  • Well versed with working in consultancy where quality of services, customer needs and engagement of colleagues go hand in hand
  • Fluent or minimum B2 level Norwegian or other Scandinavian languages, oral and written

COWI has customers and projects that may require security clearance at various levels. There may therefore be requirements for security clearance in some projects/positions.

A place to work and so much more

At COWI, we work together with our customers to shape a sustainable and liveable world. We do it by applying our knowledge and curiosity – and sometimes even our courage – to create the solutions the world needs today to enable a better tomorrow. That is why we say no to fossil-based projects and aspire to have 100% of our revenue come from activities that move our customers towards sustainability.

We value differences and development and cultivate an environment of belonging and having fun. Because that is what brings out the best in you, at work and at home.

With offices primarily located in the Nordic region, the UK, North America and India, we are currently more than 8,000 people who bring their skills in engineering, architecture, energy and environment into play.

What we also offer:

  • The opportunity to build up your skills with exciting projects
  • Good opportunities for personal development through a personal development plan, COWI Academy and the COWI Connect mentoring scheme
  • National and international collaboration across organizations and disciplines. We have approx. 70 different professional networks in COWI
  • An active company culture with social and athletic activities, “lønningstreff” and company cabins
  • Flexible working hours with a home office arrangement, five weeks' holiday and time off between Christmas and New Year
  • A separate community called "Young in COWI" for employees under the age of 34, where social trips and events are arranged
  • Finally, a good working environment. It is important for us to be generous and stand up for each other. Which is also reflected in our well-being and employee surveys
