Geotechnical Engineer
Unit Geotechnics in department Structures is looking for geotechnical engineers to meet an increasing demand for our services in the market and strategic growth ambitions.
Department Structures in service area Offshore Infrastructure & Technology in business area Energy Systems in DNV is a leading competence center within assessments of loadbearing structures, serving the offshore industry across ocean-based sectors. A total work force of 150 subject matter experts (100 in Norway and 50 in Germany) are working in unique teams of world leading experts with different aspects of structural integrity related matters for load bearing structures such as fixed and floating wind turbines, solar plants, oil and gas structures, fish farms and floating bridges.
Department Structures is responsible for technical advisory and verification services for assessments of load bearing structures in Region Northern Europe, but also supports other regions and business areas in DNV, such as Offshore Class and Renewables Certification, and work closely with business area Digital Solutions in developing next generation software and framework for analyses and design of loadbearing structures. The department is at the forefront of technology and leads the offshore industry forward through among others leading Joint Industry Projects and developing rules and guidelines.
We are looking for candidates who have ambitions to grow as specialists within geotechnical engineering, and in addition want to develop a broader and more holistic understanding of our business and loadbearing structures in general. The candidate will be given excellent opportunity to grow expertise through project work and technology and service development, solving complex matters for the offshore industry in multidisciplinary project teams. Our projects cover all sides of structural integrity related matters from assessments of environmental loads, foundations and mooring systems, structural behaviour, functionality and capacity of structures, asset integrity management, lifetime extension to marine operations during transport, installation and decommissioning of structures.
The Geotechnical Engineer reports to Head of Section and is a member of a highly skilled geotechnical team of 10 subject matter experts with growth ambitions. This team serves clients with geotechnical advisory and verification services in single discipline projects owned by own unit as well as multidisciplinary projects owned by other parts of DNV across ocean-based sectors and is heavily involved in the renewable sector. Primary tasks of this role are interpretation of soil investigations and conditions and assessments and numerical analyses of soil stability and soil-structure interaction connected to e.g. fluke anchors and suction anchors, gravity based foundations and monopiles for a wide range of loadbearing structures such as fixed and floating wind turbines, jackets, jack-ups, subsea installations, pipelines and bridges.
Our Geotecnical unit is working with projects all over the world in close cooperation with geotechnical colleagues from Hamburg, Copenhagen, London, Loughborough, Perth, Johannesburg, and San Diego. We have ongoing projects related to energy islands, fixed and floating wind turbines, floating solar PV, trenching of cables, scour protection, carbon capture projects, and LNG. In addition, we have ongoing projects within subsea, floating fish farms, pipelines, geohazards etc.
In general, subject matter experts work both as project team members and project managers and contribute with technology and service development, customer interaction and tendering work dependent on seniority and demand. Normally, a chargeability between 70% and 90% can be expected after onboarding dependent on involvement in non-chargeable activity such as tendering work and technology and service development.
Position Qualifications
- Educated to at least master’s degree level or equivalent
- Civil Engineer with major in Geotechnical Engineering
- Proven interest within geotechnics and structures, such as interpretations of soil investigations and assessments and numerical analyses (FEM) of soil-structure interaction, soil behaviour and soil stability
- Knowledge within software and software development is an advantage
- Sound knowledge of the ocean-based industry and relevant markets & sectors
- Positive team player
- Self-motivated and result oriented with ability to meet deadlines
- Commercial mindset and customer orientation
- Strong listening and communication skills
- Good written and oral language skills within English and Norwegian
