About the role
Unit Environmental Loading and Response in department Structures is looking for experienced engineers within advanced hydrodynamics, metocean criteria and wave statistics to meet an increasing demand for our services and strategic growth ambitions.
Department Structures in service area Offshore Infrastructure & Technology in business area Energy Systems in DNV is a leading competence center within assessments of loadbearing structures, serving the offshore industry across ocean-based sectors. A total work force of 100 highly skilled engineers are working in teams of world leading experts within aspects of structural integrity of load bearing structures such as fixed and floating wind turbines, solar plants, oil and gas structures, fish farms and floating infrastructures.
Department Structures is responsible for technical advisory and verification services for assessments of loadbearing structures in Region Northern Europe. The department supports other regions and business areas in DNV, such as Offshore Class and Renewables Certification. We also work closely with business area Digital Solutions in developing software applications for analyses and design of loadbearing structures. The department is at the forefront of technology and leads the offshore industry forward through leading Joint Industry Projects and developing rules and guidelines.
The position offers great opportunities to apply and develop personal and technical skills in various areas dependent on qualifications and interests.
Relevant activities are:
- Hydrodynamics and wave loads (e.g. HydroD/Wadam)
- CFD analysis (e.g. StarCCM+, OpenFOAM, ComFlow)
- Physical description of the ocean environment including statistical modelling
- Development of site specific metocean criteria
- Statistical analysis and data processing
- Programming to ensure effective work processes
- Project management
We are looking for senior candidates with more than 8 years of relevant working experience who have ambitions to grow as specialists within the above areas. The candidate will be given excellent opportunity to grow expertise through project work and technology and service development, solving complex matters for the offshore industry in multidisciplinary project teams. Our projects cover all sides of structural integrity related matters from assessments of environmental loads, foundations and mooring systems, structural behavior, functionality and capacity of structures, asset integrity management, lifetime extension to marine operations during transport, installation and decommissioning of structures.
The hydrodynamic Engineer reports to Head of Section/Team Leader and is a member of a highly skilled team of 20 subject matter experts with growth ambitions. This team serves clients with advisory and verification services in single- and multidisciplinary projects across ocean-based sectors and is involved in the renewable sector, particularly within offshore wind and solar energy.
In general, subject matter experts work both as project team members and project managers and contribute with technology and service development, customer interaction and tendering work dependent on seniority and demand.

About you
We seek you who hold a MSc/PhD within marine technology, applied mathematics, statistics, physics or similar and should preferably be familiar with:
- Hydrodynamics and wave loads
- Description of the ocean environment and environmental loading
- Advanced numerical analyses:
- Motion response analysis
- Knowledge of the ocean-based industry and relevant markets & sectors
- Development of metocean criteria for wind, waves and current
- Relevant international rules/standards and recommended practices.
- Programming, scripting etc. (e.g. Python, Matlab, Fortran)
- Software and software development is an advantage
- Network within the Oil&Gas and/or the renewable industry
You should have the following personal qualifications:
- Good written and oral language skills within Norwegian and English
- Strong analytical competence and numerical skills
- Positive and proactive team player
- Self-motivated and result-oriented with ability to meet deadlines
- Customer orientation and commercial mindset
- Strong listening and communication skills
