About Energy Systems
We help customers navigate the complex transition to a decarbonized and more sustainable energy future. We do this by assuring that energy systems work safely and effectively, using solutions that are increasingly digital. We also help industries and governments to navigate the many complex, interrelated transitions taking place globally and regionally, in the energy industry.
About the role
As an Earth Observation Data Scientist, you will join a highly competent and passionate team dedicated to developing data-driven solutions for complex challenges in safety, sustainability, energy transition, and ESG compliance. You will work closely with customers and partners to deliver actionable insights, develop scalable analytics pipelines, and contribute to the advancement of DNV’s EO capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement machine learning and deep learning models for satellite and geospatial data analysis (e.g., methane detection, infrastructure monitoring, biodiversity assessment).
- Integrate and process multimodal datasets (optical, SAR, hyperspectral, LiDAR, meteorological, and ancillary data).
- Build and automate scalable data processing pipelines using Python and cloud-based solutions.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and international partners to deliver customer-facing projects.
- Support the development of recommended practices and standards for EO data analytics.
- Present findings and recommendations to customers, supporting their digital transformation and compliance journeys.
- Contribute to proposal writing, research activities, and the expansion of DNV’s EO service portfolio.
About you
You are a pioneering Earth Observation specialist with a strong academic foundation, ideally holding a PhD or Master’s degree in Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics, Computer Science, Physics, Data Analytics, or a closely related discipline. Your expertise centers on integrating and analyzing diverse satellite and sensor datasets—including multimodal data fusion— to solve complex environmental and safety challenges, with a particular emphasis on advanced analytics for emissions detection and source attribution.
You have hands-on experience in AI and machine learning, demonstrated through your work with satellite imagery, geospatial time-series data, and environmental datasets. Your proficiency in Python and scientific programming is complemented by deep familiarity with geospatial libraries and tools such as GDAL, rasterio, and geopandas, as well as practical experience with GIS platforms and remote sensing technologies.
You excel at developing and validating deep learning models for Earth Observation applications, including pre- and post-processing of satellite imagery and the integration of multiple satellite data sources. Your contributions to interdisciplinary projects—spanning sustainability and safety—reflect your ability to thrive in international, collaborative teams.
Experience with cloud computing, scalable analytics platforms, and large-scale data pipelines (Azure, AWS, PostGIS, Blob Storage) is highly valued. You bridge the gap between academic research and industry application, translating innovative methods into practical solutions for sustainability and digital transformation.
Your passion for climate action, regulatory innovation, and leveraging data-driven solutions to address real-world challenges distinguishes you as a forward-thinking leader in Earth Observation. You communicate effectively, collaborate across disciplines, and flourish in diverse, purpose-driven environments.
Experience with ESG standards, regulatory compliance, and sustainability reporting is a plus. You are fluent in English, and knowledge of Norwegian or other languages is advantageous.
Security and compliance with statutory requirements in the countries in which we operate is essential for DNV. Background checks will be conducted on all final candidates as part of the offer process, in accordance with applicable country-specific laws and practices.
