As a trusted voice for many of the world’s most successful organizations, we use our knowledge to advance safety and performance, set industry benchmarks, and inspire and invent solutions to tackle global transformations.

About the role

Since 2008, DNV has hosted the prestigious DNV Summer Project, which invites students with different academic backgrounds to solve a highly relevant topic, which is of concern for the industry.

The Summer Project last for 6 weeks, and we invite 4th year students on their master program to apply. Every year we chose a new topic and invite a cross-disciplinary team to spend the summer with us, our great colleagues and 7 other students. This year we invite you to solve the next summers project: “Can technology replace the human eye?”.

Initial thoughts on the project:

There is great interest in loading the ships with more and more goods. It is commercially attractive, but the effects are devastating. The navigator's view is taken away and makes it more difficult to react to situations.

Meanwhile, many ships already sail with a few cameras to help in such situations, but here are the observations:

  • It is not always easy to recognise in which direction a camera is pointing.
  • It is not possible to judge distances well from a camera shot.
  • In poor weather conditions, the camera does not recognise lights.
  • There are various tools that are used such as cameras, radar, AIS and others. All separate and not integrated.

The question arises, is it possible to replace the human eye with technology on ships?

  • How safe is a solution?
  • How realistic is it to integrate it on existing ships?
  • And is this a financially attractive option?

We ask the students to develop a business case that considers the commercial aspects. As we believe this technology is highly relevant for the success of autonomous vessels.

We are truly looking forward to receiving your application - welcome to DNV!

About you

This is a highly multidisciplinary task. We want students focusing on navigation to take the perspective of the ‘Officer on Watch’. Someone who is familiar with the various technologies and can suggest creative possibilities. We also believe that we can benefit from expertise in autonomous cars. Can functionalities from this industry be transferred to the maritime world? It will also be essential to have someone with risk assessment experience and another person who is willing to research and apply the different methodologies. We need someone who can look at the business case from the commercial side and check the feasibility.

We are seeking a cross-disciplinary team of about eight engaged and dedicated students to help us investigate these opportunities.

Typical educational background that we believe are in need could be within the field of Marine, Mechanical, Data Science and IT, Cybernetics, Environmental Engineering and Business/Economics. Of course, if you are a person people find it fun to work with or that you believe your competence is highly relevant, we would love to read your application!

If you want to take part in this exciting journey, this is your chance to develop and learn more about DNV and our services. Apply for next year’s summer project!

We are looking for candidates with as many as possible of the following qualities:

  • Quick learner and data smart
  • Open-minded and curious
  • Self-driven and willing to share
  • Flexible and service-minded
  • Structured and systematic
  • Analytical
  • Able to work both individually and in teams
  • Fluent in English, both verbal and written
