About the role
The Fire Safety & Life-Saving section is part of the Approval Center Europe in DNV Maritime Ship Classification. We are international and Cross-location team with colleagues working in Oslo, Hamburg or Gdynia.
As an approval engineer in our unit, you will become part of a highly qualified team focusing on ship safety. We perform Type Approval and MED (Marine Equipment Directive) Certification of Fire Safety and Life Saving Equipment as DNV has been appointed by Norwegian and German authorities to undertake MED assessment procedures as a Notified Body for Norway and for Germany. The directive applies to equipment placed onboard new or existing ships flying the flag of an EU country, Norway or Iceland.

It is expected that training for acquiring the relevant MTAS (competence confirmation element) shall be provided by us, so that in due time the successful candidate will be able to work independently and provide high-quality solutions to our internal and external customer’s challenges within the framework of our rules and instructions.
Typical work tasks as approval engineer within fire safety and lifesavings:
- Approval of drawings/plans for fire safety systems and lifesaving equipment. This includes, but is not limited to the following types of plans:
- Structural fire protection plan
- Fire control and safety plan
- Fixed Fire detection system documentation
- Fixed Fire extinguishing system documentation
- Escape route plans
- Lifesaving equipment arrangement plan
- Meetings with customers and internal stakeholders on projects
- Bigger multi-discipline projects start with internal kickoff meetings, and usually include kickoff meetings with customers as well
- Meetings with customers to determine the scope of work is also common.
- Handling and distributing incoming orders/alteration requests from customers
- This is usually done by the part of the section primarily working with conversions.
- Provide discipline input to larger conversion/alteration projects and administrates smaller single discipline projects
- This is usually done by the part of the section primarily working with conversions.
- Involvement in revision of DNV-rules
- During the revision of DNV-rules most of the section is involved in one way or another. Either writing/revising the rules, providing feedback to rule revisions or through the implementation of the new rules into DNV’s “Rules and Standards” database.
- Participation processes related to projects beyond plan approval
- HAZIDs
- Pre-contract meetings
- Alternative design processes
- Other projects and responsibilities given to the section:
- Update of internal SOLAS course
- Participation in different work groups: IMO, IACS, Naval Ship Code.
- Witness testing of various extinguishing systems or other systems.
In addition to various work tasks, we approve documents for a lot of different vessel types. From passenger ships, High Speed Crafts, different types of cargo vessels, offshore supply vessels, naval vessels, fishing vessels and occasionally barges and yachts.
We also use a various set of rules and regulations during approval. National regulations, SOLAS, different IMO Codes, in addition to DNV-rules.
The section is also heavily involved in the implementation of new fuel types in the maritime industry as these poses new challenges with respect to fire safety.

About you
Qualifications:
- MSc or BSc within Naval Architecture, preferably with competency in Fire safety and Life-Saving.
- 2-5 years of work experience
- Thorough, with good analytical skills
- Customer oriented
- Result driven
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English
- Team player with a positive attitude who strive to obtain results for the team
- Experience in performing tests of fire safety / LSA equipment
- Motivated and eager to expand your skills
- Dedication for ship safety systems and innovative solutions, high integrity
- Flexibility with regard to work tasks, ability to adapt to the situation.
